Dog Costumes at Costume Craze
9/13/2007   Once upon a time there was a dog named LOLA. I met a dog today. I'll go ahead and call her Lola. I actually heard a little about her before I got to meet her. It seems Lola was the pet of a person or family (I didn't ask and it doesn't matter which) who thought they would breed her. Lola is a Chihuahua who was not spayed (obviously). I can't tell you exactly how old but she is neither a puppy nor an old lady but through the irresponsible acts of her owners, she could have died an entirely unnecessary, untimely death. Lola went into labor the other day and gave birth to a still born puppy. Lola was not able to give birth to the second puppy due to its size. By the time the owner brought Lola into the vet, the puppy she was carrying (almost half her size.... again, something responsible breeding could have avoided or addressed) was dead and had to be removed by emergency C-section. Lola is a fighter. While her pups did not make it, she is on the mend. Lola is an example of what happens when people without the education or experience necessary attempt to breed for fun or profit. I met Lola after hearing her story and I can tell you that from the oozing surgical site and pointless lactation..... Lola did not have fun and on the profit side... the owners surrendered her due to their unwillingness or inability to pay the fees. No fun, no profit, no puppies and almost... no LOLA. Please spay and neuter. I will update when and if I hear anything new about Lola. **** UPDATE Lola is doing well and I have asked for a picture so those of you who emailed best wishes can see this tough girl for yourselves. She is homed for life and  with two parents in the pet care and veterinary fields.... she is not only homed but in a GREAT home!

The great thing about the most recent donation that I made to is that I was allowed to earmark it for spay/neuter expenses only. While every area of the rescue industry needs and appreciates your support. I personally feel that my donation dollars do the most good addressing the unwanted/unloved pet population at the source. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. Every spay or neuter helps! The funny thing is, as strongly as I feel about donations going to spay/neuter operations to curb the population explosion at the source, I didn't even mention the earmark issue when I sent the money. Sometimes, you just have to leave it to the people who deal with rescue issues every day to use their judgement. I have faith that the money was or will be well spent.

          "MAN'S BEST FRIEND."

Senator Vest had been retained as the Attorney of a man whose dog had
been wantonly shot by a neighbor. The plaintiff demanded $200.00.

When Vest finished speaking the jury awarded $500.00 without leaving
their seats. This is what he said:

"_Gentlemen of the Jury:_ The best friend a man has in this world may
turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has
reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and
dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good
name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he
may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most.

"A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill considered
action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor
when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice
when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely
unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that
never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous
is his dog.

"A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and
in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground where the wintry winds
blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's
side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the
wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the
world. He will guard the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a
prince. When all other friends desert, he remains.

"When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces he is as
constant in his love, as the sun on its journey through the heavens. If
misfortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless
and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies,
and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in his
embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all
other friends pursue their way, there by his grave side will the noble
dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert
watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."

"There is but one drawback to a dog's friendship,
It does not last long enough."

   --_Van Dyke._

Does she deserve more? She's tired, she's in pain and she'll be expected to do it all again in a month or so...... whether she wants to or not. Five out of ten dogs  and seven out of ten cats in shelters are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them. Of the 6 puppies in this litter, how many would you trade places with today?  Adoption over purchase and then have your pet spayed or neutered.... please.
